Taiwan E-Bike Exports Flourishing

Taipei, Taiwan - According to statistics released by Taiwan's Bureau of Foreign Trade and Taiwan Bicycle Association (TBA), the total export volume of traditional (non-electric-assist) bicycles from Taiwan in 2018 was 2.21 million units, a decrease of 6.72% compared with the same period in 2017. However, in terms of total value, exports were US$1.477 billion, up 11.36% from the previous year. The average unit export value was US$668.38, a substantial increase of 19.38%.

In 2018, Taiwan's e-bike exports exceeded 283,000 units, which was a substantial 56.11% higher than 2017. The export value was US$375 million, an increase of 51.86%, and the average unit value was US$1,326.87 US dollars. In terms of total value, e-bike exports now account for more than 20% of Taiwan's total bicycle production, and anecdotal evidence suggests that this share percentage is set to increase significantly again this year.

The top five markets for Taiwan's electric bicycle exports were the Netherlands with over 76,000 units, a 33% increase from the previous year; the United States at 58,000 units, a 118% increase from the previous year; Germany with 42,000 units, a 25% increase over 2017; the United Kingdom with 20,000 units, a 150% increase and and Spain with 13,000 units, a 103% increase from 2017.

According to the statistics, Taiwan’s bicycle parts exports reached 1.359 billion US dollars and grew 11.25%. The total value of both bicycle and parts exports was 2.836 billion US dollars, an increase of 11.31% over the previous year.
