China – Leading Chinese manufacturer of e-bike drive system manufacturer, Bafang, have announced a significant investment into its own battery developments and production facility with an initial investment push of RMB 80 million (apprx. US$12 million).
Besides the rack type battery which is already available for the Max Drive system, various options are under development. Two integrated batteries, embedded in the downtube, and a standard external version which also offers semi-integrated design options. Two different core packs, which are assembled on an automated production line, will provide customers with multiple design opportunities for outer shapes and proportions to meet individual requirements and needs.
Both strategic investments are a clear sign to position Bafang as a supplier of e-drivetrain and batteries in the middle and higher segments of the e-bike market. And the market is still on the move. With more than 850.000 e-bike motor systems delivered globally in 2016, Bafang is clearly on its way to move into the higher volume and value segments.
A Bafang press rleease notes that, part of the growth stems also from the excellent acceptance of the Max Drive mid-motor
system among others. As mid motors are the preferred system for the major markets in Europe the focus on new versions is clearly set. Currently two new variations of the Max Drive, the Ultra Drive and the Modest Drive are being offered.
