Milan, Italy – The Italian two-wheel industry association, L’Associazione Nazionale Ciclo Motociclo Accessori (ANCMA) have released market figures showing that the number of bicycles sold in Italy in 2018 totaled 1,595,000 units, a drop of 5.5% from the previous year. However, as elsewhere in the world, this decrease came mainly in the field of traditional non-power-assisted bicycles, e-bike sales grew by double digits.

Last year, 173,000 e-bikes were sold in Italy, an increase of 16.8% from 2017. According to ANCMA, thanks to the introduction of EU anti-dumping duties on electric bicycles from China, Italian domestic production of e-bikes jumped dramatically to by 290% to 102,000 units in 2018, 290% more than in 2017. Furthermore, exports of pedal-assisted bicycles reached a total value of 42 million euros, plus 300% on the previous year.

Commenting on the data in a press release, ANCMA President, Andrea Dell'Orto underlined, "The great potential for further development of the sector and of the whole chain connected to it. By investing more in bicycle culture, cycling infrastructure and the promotion of cycling in our country, very important growth opportunities can be created.”
