Bicycle Exports from Taiwan Drop 27%

Taiwan – Draft statistics recently released by the Taiwan Bicycle Association (TBA) show that bicycle exports from the island plummeted by over 27% in the first six months of the year. From January to June 2016, 1,526,344 bicycles were exported globally. During the same period in 2015, Taiwan exported 2,099,824 bicycles.

Bike exports to every major market fell during this period compared to the same period last year. Exports to the US fell by 27%, Germany by 13%, the Netherlands by 21%, the UK by 45%, Japan by 33% and Switzerland by 21%.

Although the average price per bike increased by over 8% from US$414 in the first six months of 2015, to US448 in the same period this year, the total value of bicycle exports (excluding e-bikes) also fell by over 21% to US$683 million from US$869 million during the same period last year.

Not included in the data above, the TBA's draft statistics also showed a dramatic increase in e-bike exports from Taiwan. In the fist six months of this year, Taiwan exported over 71,000 e-bikes, more than double the 33,679 e-bikes exported in the first half of 2015. The average value of these e-bikes also jumped by 58% from US$630.29 last year to US$996.58 this year. As a result of hefty increases in both total quantity and average value, the total value of e-bikes exported from Taiwan in the first half of 2016 was US71 million—more than triple the total value of e-bikes exported in the first half of 2016.

While Taiwan's share of the e-bike market remains small, it should be noted that the total value of e-bikes exported from Taiwan so far this year represents a 10% share of all bicycles exported.
