Taiwan 2020 H1 Bicycle Exports Drop

Taiwan's Bureau of Foreign Trade (BoFT), has released draft statistics showing that in the first half of 2020, Taiwan's traditional bicycle export volume decreased while e-bike export volume grew. More telling is that, in terms of export value, e-bikes now make up nearly half of all Taiwanese bicycle exports.

Traditional bicycles
According to data, Taiwan exported 769,830 traditional (non-power-assisted) bicycles in the first six months of 2020, a decline of more than 25% compared to the export volume of 1,103,028 units in the same period of the previous year. The total export value was about 470 million US dollars, compared with the export value of more than 620 million US dollars in the same period in 2019. This was also a decline of more than 25%.

E-bikes
Taiwan also exported 363,181 e-bikes from January to June of this year an increase of 26.19% over the 287,814 e-bikes exported during the same period in 2019. The total export value was approximately US$460 million, which was an increase of 21.64% compared to the US$380 million exported in the same period of 2019.

According to BoFT data, Taiwan exported 234,611 e-bikes to EU countries, an increase of 16.24% compared with the export volume of 201,826 in the same period of the previous year. The total export value increased from 250 million US dollars in 2019 to 285 million in the same period in 2020.
