Belgian Speed Pedelec Registrations Exceed 22,000 in First Nine Months of 2026

Used Registrations Rise 92.2% Compared with 2023, While Leasing Companies Account for 66.1% of New Registrations

Belgium recorded 22,116 combined new and used speed pedelec registrations in the first nine months of 2026, an increase of 3,991 units compared with 18,125 in the same period of 2023, according to statistics released by mobility federation TRAXIO on 7 October 2026.

New speed pedelec registrations reached 12,293 units, up 13.4% year-on-year and 14% compared with the same period in 2024. Filip Rylant, TRAXIO spokesperson, said registrations during the summer months averaged nearly 20% above the previous year. He added that 2026 could outperform 2023 if registrations accelerate towards the end of the year.

Leasing Companies Account for 66.1% of New Registrations

Leasing companies accounted for 66.1% of new speed pedelec registrations in the first nine months of 2026, while private individuals accounted for 20.9%. New registrations by private individuals fell 8.1% year-on-year.

TRAXIO attributed the increase in new registrations partly to government procurement, including orders from the Ministry of Defence, which participated in such procurement for the first time in 2026. New leasing contracts signed when existing agreements expired also contributed to registrations.

Used Registrations Rise 32.5% Year-on-Year

The second-hand market continued to expand, with 9,823 used speed pedelecs registered in the first nine months of 2026, an increase of 2,408 units compared with the same period in 2025.

Used registrations rose 32.5% year-on-year, 63% compared with the same period in 2024, and 92.2% compared with the same period in 2023. Used speed pedelecs accounted for 44.4% of combined new and used registrations during the period.

TRAXIO said leased bicycles are replaced after several years of use and subsequently re-enter the market as second-hand vehicles. Private owners also trade in their existing speed pedelecs for newer models.

New Registrations Concentrated in Flanders

The market for new speed pedelecs remained heavily concentrated in Flanders, which accounted for 98% of national new registrations.

East Flanders led with 5,805 units, representing 47.2% of new registrations nationwide. Limburg followed with 1,951 units, ahead of Flemish Brabant with 1,945 and Antwerp with 1,818.
