PeopleForBikes has officially launched its “America Builds Bikes” initiative, supporting the bipartisan U.S. Bicycle Production and Assembly Act (H.R. 3904) to encourage domestic bicycle assembly and manufacturing.

The proposal addresses the fact that 97% of bicycles sold in the U.S. are currently imported, while many essential components with no domestic alternatives remain subject to high import tariffs, increasing the cost of local production.

Under the proposed legislation, companies assembling or manufacturing bicycles in the United States would receive a 10-year tariff exemption on imported components, helping establish a more competitive and resilient domestic supply chain.

The bill also sets phased production targets of 2 million bicycles assembled annually within five years, increasing to 5 million bicycles per year within ten years.

In addition, PeopleForBikes has launched a dedicated online platform featuring legislative updates, industry resources, and advocacy tools to help businesses engage with lawmakers and build bipartisan support.

PeopleForBikes President and CEO Jenn Dice said the initiative is not intended to close the U.S. market, but rather to provide bicycle brands with a practical and predictable pathway to expand manufacturing and assembly in America. If enacted, the legislation is expected to significantly reshape the North American bicycle supply chain.
