Spanish bicycle manufacturer Orbea has officially launched the Orbea Foundation, a new non-profit initiative aimed at creating long-term social value by supporting education, inclusion, sustainability, and cultural heritage through cycling and community partnerships.
Building on Orbea's long-standing cooperative philosophy, the Foundation will focus on projects that generate positive social impact while reinforcing the company's commitment to people, local communities, and sustainable development.
Investing in Education and Innovation
One of the Foundation's core priorities is promoting education, technical training, and entrepreneurship related to the cycling industry and the social economy.
To achieve this, Orbea Foundation is collaborating with leading educational institutions, including Mondragon Goi Eskola Politeknikoa, where it supports scholarships, entrepreneurial projects, and the development of cooperative start-ups. It is also partnering with IMH Campus to strengthen advanced manufacturing education and help develop the next generation of skilled professionals for the bicycle industry.
Promoting Inclusion Through Sport
The Foundation also places strong emphasis on social justice, supporting initiatives that improve health, inclusion, and equal opportunities through sport and community engagement.
In Spain, Orbea Foundation is working with the Spanish Cancer Association to encourage physical activity as a means of promoting health and raising public awareness. It also supports Dale CandELA, a non-profit organization dedicated to funding research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Internationally, the Foundation has partnered with CYCLITS in Germany to promote greater diversity and inclusion within cycling, while collaborating with UNICEF on projects in Africa that seek to improve children's wellbeing and living conditions.
Preserving Cultural and Sporting Heritage
Beyond education and social welfare, Orbea Foundation is investing in projects that protect cultural traditions, biodiversity, and local communities.
Its current initiatives include supporting Maille Pilota Elkartea, which preserves the traditional Basque sport of pelota; Bizipoza, an organization assisting children and families through volunteer and awareness programs; Lurgaia, dedicated to biodiversity conservation; and Zazpi Pago, a community project that combines trail-running events with the restoration and preservation of historic pathways.
Extending Orbea's Cooperative Vision
The establishment of the Orbea Foundation represents a natural extension of the company's cooperative values, expanding its role beyond bicycle manufacturing to create broader social impact. By investing in education, community development, environmental stewardship, and inclusive cycling, Orbea aims to help build stronger, healthier communities while supporting the long-term development of cycling as a force for positive change.
