The National Bicycle Dealers Association (NBDA) is celebrating its 80th anniversary, marking eight decades of supporting and strengthening Specialty Bicycle Retailers.
The association held a virtual 80th Anniversary Celebration on August 4, bringing together current and former Board members, Executive Directors, staff, industry leaders, suppliers and retailers from across North America to reflect on NBDA's history and look ahead to its future.
Founded in 1946, NBDA was established around the belief that the bicycle industry is stronger when Specialty Bicycle Retailers work together. Over the past eight decades, the association has provided education, advocacy, research, networking and business resources to help retailers navigate change, address challenges and build stronger businesses.
Eight Decades of Industry Leadership
The anniversary celebration recognized the volunteers and industry leaders who have contributed to NBDA over the past 80 years. The association has been governed by Specialty Bicycle Retailers serving Specialty Bicycle Retailers, with Board members volunteering their time while continuing to operate their own businesses.
The event also recognized former Executive Directors, including Fred Clements, who served NBDA for 27 years. During his tenure, the association expanded its educational programming, research initiatives, advocacy efforts and retailer resources.
Current Executive Director Heather Mason said the 80th anniversary represents more than a celebration of the association's history, emphasizing the importance of the NBDA community. She highlighted the contributions of volunteer Board members, staff, supplier partners and retailers in shaping the organization.
Continuing Support for Specialty Retailers
NBDA continues to support Specialty Bicycle Retailers through programs including Retailer University, Retailer Summits, advocacy at the local, state and federal levels, industry research, educational webinars, networking opportunities, member savings programs and business resources.
As the bicycle industry continues to evolve, NBDA remains focused on strengthening Specialty Bicycle Retail through collaboration, education, advocacy and community.
80% Membership Discount During August
To mark its 80th anniversary, NBDA is inviting Specialty Bicycle Retailers, suppliers, manufacturers, nonprofit organizations, industry professionals and cycling advocates from around the world to become part of its next chapter.
Throughout August 2026, all new annual NBDA memberships are available at an 80% discount. New members can use the promotional code NBDA80 when joining to receive the discount.
NBDA Membership Coordinator Melanie Fry said the anniversary provides an opportunity for more retailers, suppliers and industry professionals to join the association, exchange ideas, learn from one another and contribute to the future of Specialty Bicycle Retail.
NBDA said its first 80 years were built on the belief that collaboration makes the bicycle industry stronger, and the association is inviting the global bicycle community to join it in building the next 80 years.
NBDA currently represents more than 1,000 members across North America and provides industry education, market research, peer networking, advocacy and member savings programs. The association is led by Executive Director Heather Mason and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors composed of industry leaders.
