Germany’s bicycle and e-bike market showed signs of recovery in the first half of 2026, with production, sales and exports all increasing compared with the same period in 2025, according to figures released by the German Bicycle Industry Association (ZIV – Die Fahrradindustrie). Surplus inventories accumulated over previous years have also largely been reduced.
Bicycle production increased by 6% year on year in H1 2026, while sales rose by nearly 10%. In the e-bike segment, production grew by more than 4%, while sales increased by around 2%.
Exports of bicycles and e-bikes also recovered, rising by more than 6% compared with the first half of 2025.
Retailers Remain Cautious Despite Reduced Inventories
ZIV reported that surplus inventories built up over previous years have largely been cleared. However, retailers remain cautious with orders and continue to adjust procurement according to current market demand.
“After the first six months of the year, the bottom of the market is behind us. The industry is stable and the market is picking up again,” said Burkhard Stork, CEO of ZIV – Die Fahrradindustrie.
Stork said the positive trend provides grounds for optimism, noting that bicycle and e-bike usage is gradually increasing and that the market remains stable in the long term.
Strong Demand for Workshop Services and Aftermarket Products
Workshops at specialist bicycle retailers continue to operate at high capacity, driven by sustained demand for repair and servicing. At the same time, the shortage of skilled workers remains a key challenge for the sector.
The aftermarket is also developing positively, with significant growth reported in wear parts and accessories.
By product category, gravel bikes are becoming increasingly important in the mid- and low-price segments. Sales of entry-level hardtail mountain bikes have also risen slightly.
Stork called for targeted investment in the industry and cycling infrastructure to create the appropriate framework conditions for further market development.
