The share of people in Germany who own an E-Bike or Pedelec has reached a record 31.4%, according to a survey commissioned by energy company E.ON and conducted by market research institute Civey.

The online survey was conducted from July 8 to 23, 2026, among up to 30,000 German residents aged 18 and over, along with a subgroup of 2,500 E-Bike and Pedelec owners. According to E.ON, the results are representative.

Germany's E-Bike ownership rate has more than doubled since the survey began in 2020, when it stood at 15.2%. Compared with the previous year, the ownership rate increased by 3.4 percentage points.

The strongest increase was recorded among younger people. Among respondents aged 18 to 29, E-Bike ownership rose from 19.4% to 27.2% over the past year.

According to the survey, 40.4% of E-Bike owners use their electric bicycles for trips that they would otherwise have made by car.

By federal state, Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) recorded the highest E-Bike ownership rate at 39.4%, followed by North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westfalen) at 34.1%, Bavaria (Bayern) at 33.7%, and Schleswig-Holstein at 33.2%. Berlin recorded the lowest rate at 15.1%.

Private purchase remains the most common way of acquiring an E-Bike, accounting for 81.3% of acquisitions nationwide. Nearly 11% of respondents said they obtained their E-Bike through employer-supported schemes, such as company leasing or financial subsidies. The remainder used other financing methods, including private leasing.
